If you are tired of watering, mowing, and watching your grass brown out every summer, artificial turf gives your Encinitas yard a green lawn all year with almost no upkeep. The key is a proper installation: a compacted base, real drainage, and the right infill, so the turf still looks good years from now.
At Panjia Outdoors, our own crews have been installing turf across North County San Diego since 2008. To see what your yard would need, schedule a site visit with our team or call (888) 600-9270.
Why are so many Encinitas homeowners replacing their grass?
Because keeping a lawn green here is a losing fight. Dry summers, rising water bills, and watering limits all push in the same direction, and coastal conditions make it even harder.
Much of Encinitas sits on sandy coastal soil. It drains fast, which sounds good until you realize your water runs straight past the roots. From Leucadia down to Cardiff-by-the-Sea, a lot of homeowners water constantly and still end up with patchy, yellow grass by August.
Salt air near the beach adds stress too. Homes a few blocks from Moonlight Beach or along Coast Highway 101 often deal with grass that burns at the tips and never quite recovers.
Then there is the bill. Whether your water comes from San Dieguito Water District or Olivenhain Municipal Water District, a thirsty lawn is one of the biggest things you pay for outdoors. Turf cuts that line close to zero. You keep a green yard and stop paying to water one.
What does quality artificial turf installation involve?
A quality install is mostly about what goes under the turf. The surface is what you see. The base decides how it holds up.
We start by removing about 3.5 to 4 inches of existing soil and grass. Where needed, we treat existing growth first so it does not push back through later.
Next comes the base. We use Class II road base rather than decomposed granite, because DG can turn soft when it gets oversaturated. Class II is crushed rock with fines, and we compact it in layers with a plate compactor to 95 percent. On sandy Encinitas soil, that firm base is what keeps the turf from settling into dips over time.
A 25-year weed barrier goes over the whole area, then the turf is rolled out, cut, and seamed. We use an S-seam, cut in a curve, instead of a straight butt seam, so the joins disappear instead of showing as lines across your yard.
How does drainage and infill affect your turf?
Drainage keeps your yard usable after rain and keeps pet areas clean. Infill keeps the blades standing up and protects the backing from sun.
Our standard residential turf, El Dorado 80, drains more than 30 inches per hour, which easily handles a winter storm or irrigation runoff from nearby beds. Puddles drain away instead of sitting on the surface. For dog runs, Kennel Pro uses a flow-through backing that drains over 800 inches per hour.
For infill, silica sand is the baseline in most landscape areas. In pet areas, we use Envirofill, a rounded, coated sand with an antimicrobial treatment that helps control odor. Play areas get deeper infill for extra cushion.
To finish, we run a power broom against the grain. That lifts the fibers and works the infill down where it belongs, so the lawn looks full from day one instead of flat.
Why does a proper install outlast a cheap one in San Diego?
Because San Diego sun, sandy soil, and winter rain expose every shortcut. A cheap install often looks fine for the first few months, then the problems start.
Thin or soft base material settles, leaving low spots that hold water. Skipped weed barrier lets growth push through the edges. Butt seams pull apart and show as stripes. Not enough infill lets the blades mat down, so the lawn looks tired long before it should.
A homeowner joked with us that his lawn was getting more attention than his children and still looked "terrible." He wanted to finally enjoy his yard without pouring his heart and soul into it with no reward. That is exactly what a good turf install should give you, and a bad one cannot.
We install IntegriTurf exclusively. El Dorado 80 carries a 15-year manufacturer warranty, and our own 10-year workmanship warranty covers the install. You can learn more about our family-owned company and how our in-house crews work.
How much does artificial turf cost, and how fast is the install?
Most residential landscape turf runs about $11 to $16 per square foot installed. Pet turf runs a bit higher, and putting greens are their own category. A 1,000 square foot conversion typically lands around $11,000 to $18,000.
Rebates can help. SoCal Water$mart offers $2 per square foot for qualifying residential customers, and some San Diego County programs offer more. Applications must be approved before work begins, so plan ahead before demolition day.
Most residential projects take one to two days. Jobs with heavy grading, drainage work, or concrete removal take longer, and you get a written timeline with your estimate.
The payoff is simple: a green yard year round, no mowing, no brown patches, and a lot less water. If you are in Encinitas and ready to stop fighting your lawn, book a consultation with Panjia Outdoors or call (888) 600-9270, and we will come measure your yard.
