What goes into an outdoor kitchen

Building an outdoor kitchen in San Diego means planning around how you actually cook and host, not just dropping a grill on the patio. Most of our builds start with three questions: where the cook stands, where guests sit, and how the space ties into the rest of the yard.

A typical layout has a built-in grill, counter space on both sides of it, and storage underneath. After that, it comes down to the household. Some clients want one cooking station and a bar. Others want a full setup with a side burner, a refrigerator, a sink, and a pizza oven. We size the footprint to the lot and the budget, then build around the pieces you will actually use.

Seating is part of the design from the start. A raised bar ledge lets guests sit across from the cook without crowding the work area. We finished a wraparound outdoor kitchen in Poway with an upper-level barstool seating ledge that did exactly that, keeping the cooking zone clear while giving guests a place to sit and talk.

Materials and appliances

The frame and counters carry the whole build, so that is where we spend the most thought. We work in masonry block with stone or stucco facing, and we top counters in granite, porcelain, or sealed concrete depending on the look you want. Stainless components hold up to coastal air far better than cheaper finishes, which matters this close to the water.

On the appliance side, we install grills, side burners, refrigerators, ice makers, sinks, and pizza ovens from the brands homeowners already know. If you have a grill you love, we build the cabinetry around it. If you want a recommendation, we will point you toward gear that fits the cooking you do and the budget you set.

Our process

1. Consultation. We come to the property, look at the space, and talk through how you cook and entertain. You leave with a rough direction and an honest read on budget.
2. Design. We put together a layout and material plan so you can see the kitchen before we break ground, then adjust until it is right.
3. Permits. Outdoor kitchens with gas, electrical, or plumbing usually need permits in San Diego County. We handle the paperwork and the inspections so you are not chasing the city.
4. Build. Our in-house crews handle demolition, foundation, masonry, utilities, and finish work. One team from start to finish keeps the schedule tight and the quality consistent.
5. Walkthrough. Before we call it done, we walk the space with you, test every appliance, and fix anything that is not right.

Pricing

Most outdoor kitchen builds start around $15,000. The price climbs with the size of the footprint, the appliances you choose, and the amount of stonework involved. A compact grill station with a bar sits at the lower end. A wraparound kitchen with multiple appliances and full stone facing runs higher. Treat that number as a starting point, not a quote.
