How Long Does Artificial Turf Last?

A quality artificial turf install lasts 15 to 20 years, and often longer with light use. The cheap stuff can look tired in three or four. The gap between those two numbers has less to do with the grass you see and more to do with the base you don't, so here is what actually decides how long a turf yard holds up in San Diego.

The short answer

Good synthetic turf, installed correctly, holds up for well over a decade. The Kennel Pro turf we install carries a 15-year product warranty and a 5-year workmanship warranty, and that is a floor, not a ceiling. Plenty of well-built lawns keep looking good past the warranty because the parts that fail early were done right the first time.

What actually wears out first

Turf rarely fails all at once. It shows its age in a few specific places:

  • Matting in high-traffic lanes, where the same path gets walked or run every day and the blades lie flat.
  • Infill breakdown, when the material between the blades thins out or compacts and stops holding the fibers upright.
  • Seams, which lift or show if they were butt-seamed and nailed instead of glued properly.
  • Base settling, where a poorly compacted base sinks and leaves dips and low spots.

Notice that three of those four are install problems, not product problems. That is the whole point.

The base decides more than the grass

The single biggest factor in how long turf lasts is what goes under it. We build on Class II road base, the same crushed rock and fines used beneath roads, compacted in lifts to 95 percent. A firm, properly graded base does not settle, does not pool water, and gives the turf a stable surface for its whole life. A base that was under-compacted or thrown down thin is where premature failure starts, and no grade of turf fixes it.

Product choice and the sun

Not all turf is built the same. Heavier face weights and quality fibers resist matting far better than the thin, bargain rolls. San Diego sun is the other factor. Quality turf is UV-stabilized so it holds its color for years, while cheap turf fades and gets brittle. We only carry products built to take full sun without breaking down, which matters a lot in a county that gets it most of the year.

How you use it matters too

A quiet front lawn and a yard with two big dogs and three kids age differently. Heavy pet and play use calls for a more durable product and, for dogs, a pet-specific system that drains fast and resists odor. Matching the turf to the real use is part of getting the full lifespan out of it, which is why we ask about that at the site visit.

How to make it last

Turf is low maintenance, not no maintenance. A little upkeep adds years:

  • Rinse it down now and then to clear dust and, for pet areas, keep it fresh.
  • Brush or power-broom high-traffic lanes occasionally to stand the fibers back up.
  • Top up infill every few years if it thins out, so the blades stay supported.
  • Keep leaves and debris cleared so nothing breaks down on the surface.
