A backyard putting green is not a strip of turf with a hole cut in it. Built right, it is a real green with true ball roll, shaped breaks, and a regulation cup, the kind of surface you can actually practice on. Here is what goes into one and what to expect if you are thinking about turning part of your yard into a place to work on your short game.
A surface built to play
The green itself uses a dedicated putting turf, Platinum Putt by IntegriTurf, with a short 3/8-inch pile designed for a true, consistent roll. That short cut is what separates a real green from decorative turf. The ball tracks the way it should, at a speed that stays even across the whole surface, so the practice actually carries over to the course.
Custom breaks and contours
The fun part is the shaping. Breaks, slopes, and undulations are formed into the base before the turf goes down, so they are part of the green, not something laid on top. Want a simple flat green to groove your stroke? We can build that. Want tiers, a ridge, or a few real breaks to read? We can build that too. The contours are designed around how you want to practice.
Regulation cups and a clean fringe
Cups are set at the regulation 4.25 inches, the same size as the hole on a course, and we can place more than one so you can practice different lengths and lines. A fringe or collar around the green frames it and gives you chip-and-run shots into the surface. Small details, but they are what make a green feel finished instead of like a rug in the grass.
Sizing your green
Greens scale to the space and the goal. A tucked-away corner can hold a single-cup green for daily putting practice. A larger footprint opens up room for multiple holes, longer putts, and a chipping approach. At the site visit we look at the space you have, how you like to practice, and where the sun and slope sit, then design the green to match.
It pairs with the rest of the yard
A putting green rarely lives alone. It fits naturally alongside a patio, a seating area, or a stretch of landscape turf, so the practice space and the hangout space work together instead of competing. Building them at the same time also means one base plan and one clean grade across the whole yard.
Maintenance is minimal
A synthetic green asks for very little. Blow or brush off leaves and debris, give the surface an occasional groom to keep the roll consistent, and top up the infill if it ever thins. No mowing, no watering, no chemicals. It plays the same in January as it does in July.
